■James Blood Ulmer
Born in South Carolina in 1940, he is said to have been familiar with gospel since childhood, partly due to his father's influence. After that, he moved to Philadelphia where he encountered soul jazz. He moved to Columbus in Ohio and performed his first recording with organist Hank Marr.
After moving to New York in the early 1970s, he performed in bands such as Art Braykey, Paul Brayer. After that, he joined the band of Annett Callman, which had a great influence on his style today, and went on a tour. Later in the 1980s, he was active in recording and tours at his own band Music Revelation Ensemble, and many recording sessions.
In general, Urmar is considered to be the artist of Freejaz and Avant-Gardiz, but Menfis Brad, which was recorded in Memphis Sun Records with Living Color Venon Reed as a producer and also covers Bruce's masterpieces.
Some critics of his music, from blues, gospels to avant-garde jazz, which are the roots of such black music, described it as something like Skip James and Albert Ayler jam in Mississippi Delta, which is strange.
He is 78 years old this year, but is still active in solo, band, and sessions.
It seems that he himself is the last tour of Japan, but I would like to be honestly pleased that that the unique guitar play and the bitter vocals can be heard again.
