The Penguin Café Orchestra (PCO) began working around 1972 with a U.K. musician Simon Jeffs (1949-1997). Debuted from OBSCURE, an environmental music label by Brian Eno in 1976. In the 1980s, when music such as ambient, minimal, and techno attracted attention, he became the flagship of fashionable environmental music/subculture, and was supported by many up-and-coming artists and created followers. A legendary chamber orchestra that continues to have a great influence not only on the music scene but also on movies and art scenes. David Vintray, a leading choreographer of U.K., is also known for creating the work "Pengin Café" by the Royal Ballet in the UK (New National Theatre premiered in Japan in 2010 and will be replayed in the spring of 2013) inspired by PCO's concept and music diversity.
Simon died young in 1997 and was forced to stop activities, but in 2009, his son Arthur Jeffs took over his father's will, renewing his members, and renamed "Pengin Cafe". In 2011, the first album "A Mater of Life" as a new Penguin Cafe, the first album "The Mater of Life" as a new Penguin Cafe...."(VITO-112) and started in earnest, including concerts. In this way, the music of Penguin Café was handed down from his father Simon to his son Arthur and revived brilliantly to the present.
In Japan, in 2007, Ryuichi Sakamoto's label commmons released a PCO best edition produced by Goro Ito and a tribute edition by luxurious musicians, and the re-evaluation has increased due to its widely known existence, and it has been supported by younger generations.
